A matter of time? Institutional timescapes and gendered inequalities in the transition from education to employment in Australia

This article explores why women miss out in the transition from educational system to labour market. Using nationally representative longitudinal data (2001–18) Household Income and Labour Dynamics Australia (HILDA) survey, we compare how long after graduation it takes men with tertiary qualifications (n = 2030) achieve key market milestones: (1) getting a full-time job; (2) permanent contract; (3) earning an average wage; (4) finding job that matches their skill level. We find significant gender differences reaching these milestones, confirming time is critical dimension for understanding gendered inequalities returns education. attribute findings incompatible ‘timescapes’ across institutions of education, family employment. The more flexible timescape education allows succeed, but inflexible employment (particularly when combined responsibilities) impedes them turning achievement into progress.
